The Avonworth Pavilion is an adaptive reuse and renovation of an early Twentieth
Century camp structure located in a scenic wooded valley. Originally built in the early
1900’s as a recreational camp by Horne’s department store for the use its employees,
Camp Horne later became a community park. By the end of the nineties, several of the
original buildings remained, but were in need of extensive updates, the ensuing years
having taken their toll.
In designing the renovation of the Pavilion, RSSC restored the shell of this little
gem and added to it, creating a more usable shelter as well as a new focal point for
the park. The roof and electrical system were completely replaced, and the wooden
structure was repaired and reinforced. New siding was added, and the wonderful
original timber roof structure was restored and given new prominence by uncovering
the eyebrow dormer windows on the roof and replacing industrial fluorescent light
fixtures with modern pendant fixtures that provide dramatic uplighting at night.
Access to the pavilion was enhanced by the inclusion of a discreet wheelchair
ramp on the rear (along with accessible parking), and the prominent addition of a
grand new entry porch, which is topped by an arched sign structure that
complements the imagery of the existing dormers. The porch acts as both a new
entrance to the structure and a stage for performances oriented toward either the
inside or the central lawn below. Finally, the exterior was upgraded from a drab
brown and beige with a bright new paint scheme and decorative lattice work that
play up the Victorian character of the architecture.
